Every day, 7000 Indians die of hunger. On 22 November 2006, Srishti Foundation launched a program with a vision to eradicate hunger from this country. To begin with, the program freely feeds 100-150 persons a day at the Srishti Annam centre in Kakinada. Those fed include the aged, children and the destitute.
In the next five years, we plan to expand this community initiative into a national one, building and sustaining 40 feeding centers across the country, each of which will feed 2,500 persons a day. Concurrently, we will set up mechanisms to train many of these 100,000 persons in a variety of vocations and skills, to help transform them into earning members of the society.
Annam is a wholly community-supported initiative; one of its goals is to cultivate the spirit of giving in the society. We encourage individuals and families to pay Rs. 2000 every year to sponsor one day of food for 100-150 people. We also work with corporate entities and institutions to get larger amounts as sponsorships.
Annam is currently in the process of arranging corpus resources to ensure uninterrupted delivery of service at its first center at Kakinada. The resources will be used towards arranging rice-growing land, a permanent building and corpus money.
